Pardon My French: Lessons from Metz

Tuesday, April 29, 2:50-3:10 p.m.
Room 236
Presenter: Anthony Miyaguchi
Modality: Traditional Talk

Abstract

As a 29-year-old software engineer, I embarked on a transformative journey: a 6-month sabbatical to study abroad at Georgia Tech Europe in Metz, France. This presentation details my experience, highlighting the unique opportunities and challenges of leveraging a study abroad option as a primarily online student. I'll share insights into the application process, the return to in-person learning after years in industry and online learning, and enriching interactions with faculty. Beyond academics, I'll discuss the cultural immersion—from navigating daily life in French to learning judo at a local community center—and travels across Europe that broadened my perspective. The presentation will cover coursework, research activities, and how this experience inspired my decision to pursue a Ph.D. (a path also taken by other OMSCS alumni, two of whom now contribute to the DREAM Lab). This presentation aims to encourage fellow OMSCS students to explore unusual opportunities in the program, demonstrating the profound personal and professional growth they can achieve.
