Overview
CS 8803 ORO: Management & Leadership in Computing is a project-driven, experiential elective that immerses OMSCS students in the management and leadership of real-world computer science research. Students work in small teams to embed within the Human Augmented Analytics Group (HAAG) at Georgia Tech, taking on hands-on responsibilities for managing research projects that involve cutting-edge fields like Computer Vision, Generative AI, and Natural Language Processing.
Rather than a traditional lecture format, the course is structured like a professional engagement. Students are responsible for the operational management of research teams (including faculty, researchers, and external partners) while also developing and executing a personal leadership initiative. The course is designed to provide a safe, supportive environment where students can practice project management, even if they have no prior experience in the specific research domains.
This course is not foundational and does not count toward any specializations at present, but it can be counted as a free elective.
Course Goals
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
- Evaluate management methodologies and frameworks to determine their effectiveness in interdisciplinary, research-driven teams.
- Collaboratively develop a structured plan that incorporates management and leadership concepts to facilitate the execution of a research project.
- Synthesize project outcomes, team dynamics, and strategies into a professional report that critically reflects on the challenges and successes of managing a data-driven research initiative.
